Title A Rosé to Quench Your Thirst!

Bulletin

 Jim, Olivier and la Soif!
He ambushed me with a fresh, delightful Sauvignon Blanc at a rollicking party hosted by Patrick and Frédéric Chabrier in February. We agreed to meet again a few days later at the Vinisud wine fair in Montpellier. He promised I would be able to taste the extensive stable of experimental cuvées that he and his partner had created at their newly acquired winery located not far from the Chabriers in the Languedoc.

At his booth I “discovered” a most lovely rosé made from the superb 2009 harvest. I knew our Members would love to have it this summer. Oh … he is Olivier Privat who, along with Ray Monahan, recently acquired the vineyards and winery they call Les Vignes du Lys .

Ray is an Irishman and Olivier is from the Pays d’Oc. Together they felt that vineyards containing mature Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Petit Grain and Pinot Gris represented great potential. It is interesting to note that the previous owners had been shipping the majority of their wine in bulk to the SAQ in Quebec. They have done a great deal to improve the vineyards, and are in the process of converting to the strict organic regime. They have also created an up-to-date wine making facility including all of the modern equipment and fermentation systems. But, perhaps most importantly they have retained the services of Emmanuel Gagnepain to supervise their winemaking. Emmanuel is a renowned oenologist who has earned up to 100 point ratings from Robert Parker for his work at Domaine la Barroche and Domaine Chante Cigale in Châteauneuf du Pape.

2009 Rosé “La Soif” - 13% Alc./Vol.                                  $14/$84 six-bottle case

Strange name, “La Soif” (the thirst) for a marvellous wine whose primary purpose will be to slake your thirst in the dog days of summer. Made from 60% Syrah and 40% Grenache, this Vin de Pays d’Oc is a most refreshing, satisfying rosé showing gobs of red fruit with light citrus nuances and a nice crisp finish. And this is not stuff made from young vines. The Syrah is between twenty-five and thirty-five years old and the Grenache thirty-five (average yield is only 35 hl./ha.). And, 2009 was a very, very good vintage for both of these varietals in southern France. I loved this wine! It will go brilliantly with Oriental cuisine, ham and salmon or by itself on a hot summer’s day. We want to make sure you get it by the time the hot weather arrives, so we are going to make this a short ordering window. We will be taking your orders to the LCBO on Friday, April 30th. Order your thirst-quenching six-pack of rosé heaven now!

Note: the above price includes a one dollar handling fee for all the work we do including tasting all these wines on your behalves.

Many thanks and cheers!
