Bulletin Untitled Page

Dear Arthur’s Cellar Wine Club Member:

Your Intrepid Taster at the Gates
We are delighted to bring you once again the delicious, refreshing 2015La Soif’ Rosé from Domaine Les Lys. Hélène and I visited the winery last month and can enthusiastically attest to the thirst-quenching attributes of this beauty from southern France.

Domaine Les Lys
We found out about Domaine Les Lys entirely by accident. Several years ago we were invited to a raucous Swiss fondue party by the Chabriers (owners of Domaine Chabrier Fils) and bumped into one of the owners of the Les Lys winery, located not far from the Chabriers. He convinced us to try his wines. We enjoyed them very much, particularly the Rosé and Chardonnay-based white wine. So, we happily took them on and their wines have been delighting our Members ever since.

Our Hostess, Marie-Hélène Veyrunes
For years the winery had sold the majority of its wines in bulk to the SAQ in Quebec. But like the Chabriers, the proprietors knew that with a little care and attention, not to mention oodles of Euros, they could produce excellent wines from the mature Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc Muscat Petit Grain and Pinot Gris planted on their properties (situated in the Duché d’Uzès and Cévennes applations). And, as it turns out, they were right.

Marie-Hélène Veyrunes and Thomas Faure had worked at the winery for several years and when the owners decided to sell, they couldn’t pass up the chance to realize their life-long dreams. They pulled together the required resources and acquired this excellent vineyard and wine making facility that is located in the countryside near Uzès in southern France. The winery has been producing delightful wines for several years now, but based on our recent tasting, It think that Marie-Hélène and Thomas have been able to take them to an even higher level.

2015 ‘La Soif’ Rosé – 12.5% Alc./Vol.     LCBO #377654        $15.95/$95.70 case of 6

‘La Soif’ (the thirst) is a strange name for a marvellous wine whose primary purpose will be to slake your thirst during the dog days of summer. Made from old vines Grenache and Syrah from vineyards converted to organic farming in 2010, it is a most refreshing, satisfying rosé that is showing lovely red fruit, peaches, wet stones and light citrus nuances and a nice crisp finish. While a fashionably pale salmon colour, this is not weak stuff made from young vines. The Syrah is between twenty-nine and thirty-nine years old and the Grenache is thirty-eight (average yield is only 35 hl./ha.). And, 2015 was a very, very good vintage for these varietals in southern France. This IGP Cévennes comes with a convenient screw cap to preserve its freshness (and make it wonderfully easy to get at!). I love this wine! It will go brilliantly with Asian cuisine, ham and salmon or by itself on a hot summer’s day.

Your Orders and the Looming LCBO Strike

The unionized LCBO employees are threatening to go on strike next Monday, June 26th. But, there is still time to order and receive your ‘La Soif’ Rosé (and Champagne Forget-Brimont) if you agree to pay an extra $12 for Canada Post to deliver your order (no matter how large) to your door. I have just ordered five cases of ‘La Soif’ this way. The folks in Specialty Services at the LCBO are going to be working all weekend to make certain your orders get out to Canada Post.

Should you know anyone who would like to seriously slake their thirst this summer, we would be delighted, nay veritably thrilled, if you would pass this note on to them.

Many thanks and cheers!

Jim, Hélène and Kate
