Title There will be more Cuvée Esparza!

Bulletin

Dear Arthur’s Cellar Wine Club Member:

As many of you have discovered, there is no more 2017 Cuvée Esparza Côtes du Rhône from Domain Palon currently available at LCBO.com. Here’s why:

The LCBO has created separate warehouse space for the products that they sell via LCBO.com. But, this space is evidently quite limited. No matter how beseechingly I implore them to make all of a given wine available on LCBO.com, they do so for just a small portion, often just a case of 12. In the case of the Cuvée Esparza, it was 72 bottles, although there was a total inventory of 263 bottles. The 72 bottles were sold in less than a day.

Now then, you would think that the LCBO would have an automated monitoring function that would alert them to the need to move more inventory to LCBO.com whenever a product sold out. Nope. I have to do this and then advise them of the need for replenishment. Once they have acknowledged this fact, it takes a week or so for them to actually do so. And, how much they move is anybody’s guess. In this case they have 191 bottles at their disposal.

All this to say that there is plenty more 2017 Cuvée Esparza at the LCBO’s disposal and with any luck some or all of it will be available to order by the end of this coming week. I’ll send out a note to let you know when it is.

By the way, the Palon’s white Vacqueyras has really sold out.

When it is available, please let me know if you would like me to place your orders directly with LCBO.com for you.

This is an excellent Côtes-du-Rhone from a a very good year. It is comprised of 69% Grenache, 16% Syrah and 15% Cinsault, all hand-picked and hand-sorted from the Palon’s five acres of vineyards in Vacqueyras (since sold). The yield was only 15 hl/ha! It is a dark and lustrous ruby red with hints of violet. The nose is of pronounced aromas of ripe cherries, plums, black currants, garrigue (the fragrant underbrush of Southern France), smoke, new leather, cassis and a hint of pepper. In the mouth it is very big, round and satisfying with delicate tannins and good length. Served slightly chilled (16°-17°C), it will go splendidly with roasts, grilled meats and medium cheeses. It will keep nicely for three to five years. This is very tasty stuff!

We will soon be off to Provence to meet the new Palon owners and to taste their vinous efforts, including a range of Côtes du Rhône. We’ll also be keeping an eye out for other candidates for Arthur’s Cellar.

Follow My Vinous Adventures on Gentleman’s Portion

I have contributed more than forty posts about my experiences in the wild and wacky world of wine to a delightful lifestyle blog called Gentleman’s Portion. The latest is called Lust Loomed Large at Latour. Please join me and my fellow contributors, Nigel Napier-Andrews and David Moorcroft, as we regale you with a good helping of everything great in life.

It would be most sporting if you would pass this note on to anyone you think might be interested in a couple of very, very good Southern Rhônes.

Many thanks and cheers!
